The Monographs Department is responsible for selecting book titles for purchase and then making the information on the titles in the medical collection available in the Tulane University Libraries' Online Public Access Catalog, TULANet Voyager. The Monographs Department uses codes as to the reason an resource is selected for purchase. The code is placed in the locally defined MARC field for order information - 945 ( MARC field subfield "x" ) in the in the bibliographic record.

Books are selected for the collection in support of the various teaching, research, and clinical care needs of the Medical Center. New titles in the medical field are considered for purchase each week. Newly processed books recently received by the library are put on the New Books Shelf in the Current Reading Room of the Library. Recommendations for purchase of new library materials may be communicated to the Monograph's Librarian.
Collection enhancement with electronic resources is in progress. Suggestions for the inclusion electronic resources are welcome and encouraged.
The Rudolph Matas Medical Library maintains data in the Tulane University's Online Public Access Catalog, TULANet Voyager. New books are cataloged in accordance with national standards. The Library adheres to current AACR2r descriptive cataloging practice and adds medical subject headings, (MeSH) in addition to the Library of Congress Subject headings (LCSH). National Library of Medicine Classification(Fifth Edition 1994, Revised 1999) is used in the classification of the Library's monograph collection. Our holdings are available in the OCLC database (OCLC symbol=LTM). NOTE: Information on the older monographic holdings,(pre-1988) may not be complete in TULANet Voyager or in OCLC. The card catalog located behind the glass entrance of our library must be used currently to access information on many of the library's older publicatons. In addition, many of the finding aids for our special collections are available in house only at present.
