Course Reserves

For Students:

Search Course Reserves - These items are behind the circulation desk in the Medical Library. During library hours most items are available to use within the library for a two hour period. Also, most items can be checked-out overnight, two hours prior to closing and must be returned one hour after the library opens the next day.

For Faculty:

Course Reserve Request Form - fill out online form to place items on reserve (paper forms are also available at the Circulation desk).

Reserve Policy:
Only material which is required reading for a course in the Schools of Medicine or Public Health may be put on reserve. Required textbooks are not automatically purchased by the library. The faculty is strongly encouraged to notify the library of all required textbook titles and may request that the library purchase these for student use.

In addition, the faculty is encouraged to request additional materials that support the curriculum in their area of expertise. These materials improve the library's general coverage and support independent student and faculty research.

1. Only instructors may request items for Course Reserve.

2. Lists for Course Reserve must be submitted ten days in advance of the date that the materials must be ready.

3. If the library does not own the material requested, the instructor may provide a departmental or personal copy for reserve. Multiple copies of any item are discouraged due to space constraints. Although the library will use measures to insure the safety and security of such items, the library will not be held responsible for the loss, theft, or damage to non-library material.

4. Non-book materials (pamphlets, reprints, photocopies, etc.) must be forwarded to the library in suitable folders or binders, with the course number, title, and instructor’s name on the cover. Any photocopies must comply with copyright law or they will not be allowed on reserve (refer to copyright statement). Final decisions regarding copyright law are left to the Library Director.

5. Library journals may not be placed on reserve.

6. Materials borrowed from another library may not be placed on reserve.

7. When the course is over, non-library material may be picked up by instructors or may be returned to them through campus mail. Library material will be taken off reserve and returned to the stacks. In either case, statistics on usage of reserve items will be sent to the course instructor whenever possible.

Copyright Statement

  1. Photocopied compilations of copyrighted articles* may not be placed on reserve without written permission of the individual copyright holders.

    • Each article must have the appropriate copyright ownership information on the first page. (i.e. "Copyright: [copyright owner - not the author, unless they are the same]"
    • Each article must have "This material may be protected by Copyright Law (Title 17 U.S. Code)" on the first page.
    • Each article must be in a separate folder labeled with the course number and the author/brief title of the article.
  3. All photocopies must clearly identify the source of the material.

*For the purposes of this statement, the words "article" and "articles" refer not only to journal articles but also to chapters from books.
